At New York's Kennedy airport today, an individual later discovered to be a public school teacher was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a setsquare, a slide rule, and a calculator.

At a morning press conference, US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said he believes the man is a member of the notorious al-gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math's instruction.

“Al-gebra is a fearsome cult,” Gonzales said. “They desire average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search of absolute value. They use secret code names like 'x' and 'y' and refer to themselves as 'unknowns', but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, 'there are 3 sides to every triangle'.”

When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, “If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math's instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes.”

Vi har haft gäster från Frankrike senaste dagarna och de ville åka skridskor på en sjö här i Uppsalatrakterna. Det enda stället som verkar hyra ut utrustning är dock Fjällnora - och dit är det omöjligt att komma med buss. Nu har de åkt vidare till Stockholm och kommer nog försöka samma sak där, men efter internet-sökandet och elaka tanter i telefonen ser det ut som det blir inte lätt där heller. Har någon missat denna marknadslucka?

Gerade habe ich mich mal wieder auf die Homepage des Dalberg-Gymnasiums in Aschaffenburg, meiner alten Schule, verirrt. Nicht wirklich viel interessantes zu sehen dort, ausser vielleicht, dass angebaut wird. Es gibt nämlich mittlerweise etwa doppelt (!) so viele Schüler da als zu meiner Zeit. Es gibt Bilder des Anbaus und wie es aussieht, wird dem schönen alten Schulgebäude ein einfallsloser Kasten vor die Nase gesetzt. Schade eigentlich. Aber vielleicht überrascht mich das Endergebnis ja eines Tages positiv...

Yesterday evening was the first clear night since weeks here in Uppsala. I took the opportunity to spend a few hours at my institute's old building where the old double refractor still resides. It is a beautiful instrument from 1892 and I although I have been here for more than three years, I had not made it to the old observatory until a few weks ago. There are regular shows for the public and since I am going to take over some of these from next week, yesterday was a good opportunity to practice the usage.

The point is that all modern professional telescopes that I have used so far (like the NOT or the VLT) let you concentrate on your science and of course they can find the objects for you. You simply put your coordinates into the computer and say "go there". As you can imagine, this is not the case with this old telescope, so you have to convert the general coordinates into your local coordinates that depend on your location and on the time and then move the telescope by hand until the scales show the right value.

That can easily be done if a clock that shows sidereal time is available, but I took the lazy way and brought my laptop with xephem on it, an astronomical software that can show you the sky and does the cordinate transformation for you.

Since it was near full moon yesterday, that was a prime target. Especially when looking at the border between light and shadow, one can impressively see the craters' three-dimensional structure. Second most prominent target right now is Mars, which was in opposition recently and is still very bright. In addition and before we froze too much, we looked at the Plejades and the Andromeda Galaxy. I am looking forward to having people and kids up there and show them things and explain what they see...

Ich habe mich hier neulich über Pressefreiheit ausgelassen und auch einen Artikel von Telepolis zur sogenannten "Cicero-Affäre" verlinkt. Nun, es ist sicherlich verständlich, dass Journalisten sich für ihre Kollegen einsetzen, aber wie es scheint ist das Vorgehen der Staatsanwaltschaft völlig berechtigt. Einen guten Überblick gibt dieser ZEIT-Artikel. Siehe auch diese kleine Diskussion.

Welch bodenlose Frechheit! Da hat jemand wirklich sich die Marke "ogg" registriert, alleine um Leute, die den verbreiteten Begriff (ein open-source Audioformat) verwenden, abmahnen zu können. Der Gipfel: Derjenige versteigert bei Ebay Beteiligungen am schmutzigen Geschäft. Mehr Information im Artikel von Telepolis.

Darf in einem kritischen Artikel ein Link auf die Web-Seite eines in Deutschland illegalen Produktes gesetzt werden, oder nicht? Die Musikindustrie denkt "Nein" und verklagte den Heise Verlag wegen eines Artikels auf der bekannten Nachrichtenseite heise.de. Jetzt hat der Verlag Verfassungsbeschwerde eingelegt gegen gefällte Urteile aus niedrigeren Instanzen. Diese Urteile gaben der Musikindustrie recht und werden jetzt schon verwendet, um Web-Seiten betreiber abzumahen. Links gehören zur Online-Berichterstattung und stellen den Hauptunterschied zu gedruckten medien dar - eine solche rechliche Ungewissheit, im Bezug auf was verlinkt werden darf, würde sicherlich zu einer Verarmung von Inhalten führen, denn wer kann und will denn schon das Risiko einer teuren Abmahnung oder eines Gerichtsverfahrens eingehen. Versuche der Zensur und Einflussnahme auf Inhalte im Internet gibt es wohl immer wieder und deshalb gerade deshalb ist es wichtig, dass der Verlag den Schritt zur höchsten Instanz geht. Ich hoffe sehr, dass das Bundesverfassungsgericht im Sinne der Pressefreiheit entscheidet.

Nachtrag: Es scheint, dass nicht nur die Industrie gerne etwas an der Pressefreiheit ändern würde - die Politik macht das auch freiwillig. :-/

I have been eyeing the iAudio X5L, which is arguably the best mp3-player on the market right now, for quite a long time to replace my Gmini 220. Apart from many small improvements the most important ones for me would be: 35 hours of playtime instead of 8, 30GB instead of 20, ogg support and therefore no need to convert to mp3, getting rid of the quirky handling of the Gmini. Nevertheless, I have decided that I won't do it. I could afford the new one in principle but its not worth it. The old one works and serves satisfactorily playing music while I bike to the institute and to hold my pictures on occasional trips. One day it will break down and then I will have the opportunity to buy a better one then. Am I a bad customer now, ignoring fancy advertisings and refusing to consume? ;-)

My French is a little rusty, to say the least. To better that, I just started a course with French classes once a week. I just came home from the first lesson - it was good. The best thing, I suppose, is that the teacher does not speak Swedish at all, which means that all explanations are in French and we have to ask our questions in French, too. Being forced to practise is for sure the best way to learn a language.

Jag brukar läsa Die ZEIT, en mycket bra tysk tidning som kommer ut varje torsdag. Det finns nog tyvärr ingen motsvarande svensk tidning men tro mig när jag säger att den har många bra artiklar inom politik över hela världen, om vetenskap och kultur, som går djupare än vanligare tidningsartiklar. Det tar en hel vecka att läsa denna tidning och jag ligger t.o.m. ganska ofta efter en utgåva med läsandet. Förr i tiden fanns det en affär som hette "Press Stop" vid Stora Torget i Uppsala som hade ett mycket bra utbud av icke-svenska tidningar, bl.a. ZEIT på samma dag som den kom ut, om jag minns rätt. Affären har stängts och jag har hört rykten att det var p.g.a. tryck från Pressbyrån som ville ha monopol på tidningsförsäljning - typiskt svenkst, det där med monopoler? Nuförtiden finns alltså Pressbyrån på utsidan av St:Per Gallerian som har rätt många tidningar, men ingen koll. De orkar för det första inte att få ZEIT på samma dag varje vecka. Ibland finns den på fredagen, ibland på måndagen efter, ibland inte alls. Det värsta är att personalen inte vet någonting, inte när den kommer, inte ens om den har kommit och är redan slutsåld, vilket kan hända eftersom det finns en hel del tyskar i Uppsala. Även om jag har upptäckt att Pressbyrån i tågstationen har ZEIT:en ochså och även om det tar i princip längre att får den skickat via post från Tyskland, så har jag slutligen prenumererat på den. Jag har helt enkelt tröttnat på att söka på flera ställen i stan flera gånger i veckan. Skyll er själva, pressbyråer, som slipper sälja tidningen med era extra-höga pris till mig...

I just watched the latest episode of Battlestar Galactica. With terror, I figured out that this already was the last episode of Season 2 and of course, it ended with a classic cliffhanger! Too bad - I now have to wait until next year to know how it will continue. This series is a remake of the classic 1978 series, also called "Battlestar Galactica". I really enjoyed occasionally watching this new SciFi series during the last months. It has a rather advanced plot that gets driven forward significantly in each episode. The dark atmosphere and the focus on the fracked-up characters instead of special effects make it further appealing. Highly recommendable if you have a soft spot for Science-Fiction.

How long has it gone when I deliberately (!) do sports? Quite far I suppose, but nevertheless, I just came home from my first session of Aikido lectures at Uppsala Aikikai. I liked it and most probably will continue for this term, twice a week.
